Mail Plug-ins have been updated!

As most of you now know Mail with Leopard brought a whole host of new features and alas broke all of our favourite plug-ins...

The good news is that those diligent people that make the plug-ins have been hard at work and the progress is good and getting better!

The Mac developer community has dug deep and updated the following plug-ins for Leopard goodness....

  • AttachmentScannerPlugin - It's all Leopardy now - go get it!.
  • MailActOn 1.3.3 is in Public Beta and hasn't caused me any major grief, but YMMV - it certainly isn't perfect yet, but Scott's on it
  • MailTags is in Public Beta 2 - and lots of work has been going on under the hood, expect an updated beta soon if not the final release. (See Scott's comments below)
  • MailFollowup for Leopard is up and running!
  • SignatureProfiler - version 1.4.4 is out and Leopard compatible.
  • GrowlMail - still not compatible with Leopard, I suggest checking this thread to keep if you really need it
As you can imagine the more extensive the Mail Plugin is the more work there is for developers to do, so you'll be glad to know there is lot's of stuff going on with MailTags. Scott Morrison, he of "indev software" and MailTags fame kindly let me know that the new MailTags is going gang busters.
One of the big things Scott's been working on is re-implemented todos and events - and this brought about the next big thing.

The next version of MailTag will have "a plugin (or "extras") architecture" that will allow for quick development of additional features - and not just by Scott! That's right you heard it here first (well I did, you might already have known this). MT will have its own plug-ins.

Yes, you can expect an API, an example plug-in and documentation (whoot!) - this means any developer that wants to piggy back off MailTags (like Ta-da or BackPackIt or iGoogle or anyone making GTD s o f t ware) will be able to easily create their own MailTag's extension. In fact anything with a public API could be made to work with it by anyone with a bit of Cocoa skill! OK! SWEET!!

In fact Scott tells me this is so pervasive that Todo's and Events are now implemented as MailTag Extra's. He's even been able to implement that example extra already -
“As a test of the architecture, I've also added a "Message color" panel that easily plugs in. ( it took me about 3 hours to develop from scratch)”
