Time for Australia to take the Science & Technology lead

Thankgoodness for the Blogosphere, I thought George meant everything he said in the 2006 State of the Union, it almost restored faith in the Christian Politician. At least it give Australia a great opportunity to become the next Science & Technology Super Power, and why the hell shouldn't we? I mean George Bush seems determined to make the USofA a fundamentalist backwater of research... Lets just look at one paragraph of this years State of the Union...
"A hopeful society has institutions of science and medicine that do not cut ethical corners, and that recognize the matchless value of every life. Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research: human cloning in all its forms, creating or implanting embryos for experiments, creating human-animal hybrids, and buying, selling, or patenting human embryos. Human life is a gift from our Creator -- and that gift should never be discarded, devalued or put up for sale."
And George does mean all forms, I guess my catwoman project would have to be shelved if I lived in the US.
Just think, with the only Super Power left being driven down this path of ignoring reality and suppressing science in any form that conflicts with fundamentalist Christian views Australia has an unbelievable opportunity. Just imagine with a bit of tweaking to our immigration policy, Australia could become the Safe/Sane Haven for all of those climatologists , stem cell researchers, biologists creating chimera, disaffected NASA scientists and many other free thinkers. We could probably populate the entire East Coast with the brains of America. I guess that's one way to get a Starbucks or Gloria Jeans to open in Bathurst (caffeine's a crutch, what can I say).
The scope is nearly unlimited... oh wait, I just remembered our current Prime Minister also thinks climate change is up for debate... and our Minister of Immigration thinks humans rights are a free-thinking radicals plot... hell install a dictatorship and hope that its benevolent.
I really should lay off the caffeine, its enough to make you want to stand up and get elected. Definitely time to lie in bed for a couple of hours and try to sleep off the caffeine induced sense of god-like importance...
